Today's Auto Fluid Tip:

Power Steering is one of the most neglected systems on vehicles today. In our cold climate it is even more essential than usual in the upkeep of our steering systems. Lets learn a little on what a Power Steering System does for our cars.

Power Steerings are Hydraulic systems. Basically, when you turn the wheel, the pump pushes fluid into one side of the steering rack to help push the tires over. Turn the wheel the other way and the pump reverses and pushes into the other side. Most vehicles have one of two types of hydraulic fluid: Base PSF (Basic Power Steering Fluid) and Highly Friction Modified Transmission Fluid (easier said as ATF+). It's easy to tell what type fo fluid you have: If it's clear, it's PSF. If it's red or pink, it's ATF+. If it's brown, it's burnt and could use a change.

PSF fluid is base hydraulic fluid with little or no (Depending on quality of fluid) detergents to keep it clean. Any contanimates at all can compromise the effiency of PSF fluid and cause it not to function at peak peformance. If your PSF fluid is anything but perfectly clear, it could use a change. Ideally, base PSF fluid should last 48,000kms or about 2 years before getting too contaminated. In reality, also known as Saskatchewan, 24,000 to 36,000kms is how long it should last

ATF+ Fluid is essentially the same stuff in your transmission. It's a hydraulic fluid with an added detergent package. The fluid should be a bright red in colour,(That's the added detergents) almost pink when new. As the detergents break down over time, they turn orange, then eventually brown as the fluid ends it's life. ATF+ fluid typically lasts longer than base PSF fluids. What you are looking for is that bright red color. With ATF+ it is important to change it BEFORE it breaks down, when it turns orange. Once it turns brown, it's allready causing harm to the system.

What happens if you don't change it? Believe it or not, most of the time nothing. Nothing that we can see that is. The truth is it wears down the seals and metal parts inside the pinion rack. Under normal driving to and from work/school, you would never notice the difference. The whole reason we keep it clean and operating properly is safety. That one time on the way to work/school when someone decides it's a great idea to be batman on the freeway, or a red light doesn't exactly apply to them is the time you really want every system in your car performing to it's max.

Lastly, newer and newer vehicles are using softer and softer metals, even plastics. Most likely that the newer the car is, the more essential it is that the system remains clean to protect a huge assortment of moving parts. Not sure about anything you read here today? Feel free to stop by any of our locations to talk to a fluid expert and see your power steering system first hand.
